No Software, Security Patch Updates for Surface Duo Devices, says Microsoft

New Delhi: Operating System giant Microsoft, on Tuesday, decided that it will not give any fresh software updates to its Surface Duo tablets, for both android and security patches. The device was launched in Sep 2020 with a whopping price tag of $1,399, and users are now disappointed as they expected atleast three years of software support from the company.

The device was launched with ‘Android 10’ and it received two upgrades – Android 11 and Android 12L in January and October 2022 respectively. Company, however, promised to give atleast three android updates at the time of its launch.

Also, from the beginning of its launch, the device’ software showed problems in terms of performance. The device was launched with an older version of Android which was not optimized for their dual-screen form factor. Microsoft had a tough time convincing developers to optimize their apps for dual-screen devices.

Surface Duo users are now concerned as they will be left with older software and security patch versions, keeping their device and data at permanent risk.

The case is also the same for the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 that was released in October 2021 with Android 11. Microsoft has floated a single update in form of Android 12L in October 2022. Device will discontinue updates after October 21, 2024. This, however, remains unclear whether Microsoft will release a new Android OS upgrade for the Surface Duo 2 before ending software support.
