As per the report published by HCLTech almost 24% of the companies are planning a certain portion of the data from the cloud to the on premise in the coming 3 years.
The report was titled, “Cloud Evolution: Make Innovation a Habit” and describes the process of going from cloud to on-premises as “repatriation” and several organizations are planning to do it with their apps and workloads.
Mike Kail, CTO of PrimaryIO said that this repatriation has resulted from the clients workloads not properly optimized for the cloud. He further added that it is usually happens due to workloads being shifted and migrated to cloud without proper optimization.
Changing the workloads’ location does not provide the similar merits as modernization that will completely exploit the security, resilience and agility of the cloud. Kail also highlights that companies need to see the ROI of agility and elasticity a cloud environment provides.
Shifting workloads from cloud to the on-premises environment in the short run may negatively impact the organization as per the report.
Kalyan Kumar, Global CTO of HCLTech said, “Repatriation is more of an infrastructure workload conversation—it’s not a business value conversation. If your goal for moving workloads to the cloud is transformation and modernization of business processes, then repatriation is not a viable option.”
He further said that companies that have not modernized their applications yet may go for repatriation because they are not saving the money as they are expected to by selecting cloud as the low-cost alternative.
For this purpose, HCLTech has conducted this survey with almost 500+ senior executives like senior directors and directors to come to an inference.
